Rose van Vranken (May 15, 1917 – June 17, 2013) primarily created wood and stone carvings, with some being cast in bronze. The 11 foot tall x 6.5 foot x 4.25 foot bronze casting titled ”Flame” was dedicated to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1991. The semi abstract burning flame is located in the Dorothy H. Hudson Memorial garden by the main entrance to the hospital. It symbolizes the center’s educational mission to pass on knowledge in the areas of research, treatment, and prevention.
