“PunkBuddha” Replica
Spring 2024
This piece is a replica by an unknown artist of a piece titled Punkbuddha Marilyn IV feat. Warhol by Metis Atash. Metis Atash views her sculptures as a fusion of worldly pleasure and spiritual insight. Upon first glance, their shiny surfaces and bright colors are unmistakable, though much like the human beings they resemble, their complexity lies within. As a child growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, Metis was heavily influenced by music. She was drawn to Punk Rock with its rejection of the mainstream and perceived excesses.
OnAim started by adhering the broken pieces of the sculpture, including the missing leg, backtogether using a quick-set two-part epoxy resin. Epoxied wooden backers were added to the interior of the broken pieces for additional support. The broken sections were then attached to the main portion of the sculpture using the same quick-set two-part epoxy resin. The fault lines on the sculpture’s interior were backed with fiberglass cloth and resin for stability. Next, the remaining divots and cracks were filled with vinyl ester filler putty. The repaired sections were then sanded down until seamless. After completing the sculpture’s structural repairs, the portions where the paint was chipped were primed using material appropriate primer. After the primer was fully dry, the same portions were painted using color-matched acrylic paint. Finally, SS30 flatback color-matched rhinestones were adhered using Varthane Super Glaze two-part epoxy to finish the restoration.
